  4. *  1932 Army crushes popular insurrection led by Farabundo Martφ.
  5. *  1944û1979 Army effectively rules through PCN. 
  6. *  1979 Reformist officers overthrow PCN government. Fail to curb rising army-backed political violence.
  7. *  1981 Left-wing Farabundo Martφ National Liberation Movement (FMLN) launches civil war. 
  8. *  1991 UN-brokered peace. FMLN recognized as a political party.
  9. *  1992 Peace achieved.
